Welcome back to Year 5 and the Summer Term. We have attached some information about the summer term for Year 5, including topics and texts which we will be studying.
5W: Taught by Mr. Walker, supported by Mrs. Thompson
5R: Taught by Miss. Roberts, supported by Mrs. Culle
5C: Taught by Mr. Collins, supported by Mr. Smith and Miss. South
English:
We will be using the story book ‘Kick’ to explore and write balanced arguments. The children will create a balanced argument using Kick as our stimulus. Afterwards, we will be looking at a range of poems. This term, we will start of by exploring a range of different poems from the book ‘A Poem For Every Day of The Year’ written by Allie Esiri. This will expose children to a range of different writing styles to support their understanding of literature.
Mathematics:
This term, there will be a heavy focus on shape and measure, decimals, position and direction. We will be studying translation, tessellation and reflection and how to calculate volume. To have a firm grasp on this area of maths, it is imperative that the children know their times tables up to 12 x 12, and the corresponding division facts.
Topic:
Our topic for RE is ‘Belief or Not Belief in God’ and in RHSE, we will be looking at ‘healthy’ lifestyles and exploring our goals!
Science:
In science we will study materials where we will be practically looking at their properties.
Geography and History:
In history, we will be studying British history, comparing similarities and differences with West Africa. In geography we will be looking at OS Maps and fieldwork.
Homework:
The children will be given spellings and maths homework every Friday. We ask that children complete the work that we send home to help support their learning and hand it in the following Friday. We still encourage children to read five times a week.
PPA, P.E and Swimming:
PE will take place on a Monday and a Tuesday. P.E kits are required to be worn into school on those days. Kit consists of plain black shorts, white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. Monday PE will be outside, so children can wear school PE kit or plain grey or black joggers in the event of cold weather (no logos, additional colours or stripes are acceptable). For Summer term, 5C will be swimming every Tuesday morning, so require their swimming kits on this day, children will need to wear school uniform to school, this will continue for the entire term. 5R and 5W will rotate between PE and Art during their PPA morning, so will need to wear PE kit into school that day. If your child cannot participate in swimming or PE for any reason, they must bring a letter explaining reasons why as it is part of the curriculum.
Snacks:
As we are approaching a healthy school status, we would like to remind all parents and children that the school policy is that breaktime snacks consist of only fruit or veg in its original form.
Social Media:
In recent years, Year 5 classes have increasingly been impacted by the harmful effects of social media resulting in many children becoming deeply upset for a variety of reasons. The minimal age for ‘WhatsApp’ (for example) was 13, but has recently been raised to 16 (although this is not legally binding). We understand that it is very hard to prevent children from using social media, but we stress the importance of discussing and monitoring your child’s usage and implementing strategies to minimise the impact.
Children who wish to walk home on their own must have permission enabled on Arbor. This can be completed via the App under consents.
For your child's safety, children may bring in a mobile phone, if walking to and from school. Mobile phones MUST be handed in to the class teacher at the beginning of the day and must not be turned on until they leave school premises. Consent for mobile phones in school can be enabled via the Arbor App under consents.
