English

This term our English units will link closely to our wider curriculum topics. We will begin with narrative writing inspired by The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers. We will then explore additional writing opportunities, including work based on The Flood by Álvaro F. Villa.
There will be a strong focus throughout the term on developing basic skills, improving handwriting, and broadening vocabulary across a range of genres.

Reading

We will continue to encourage children to immerse themselves in high-quality texts and to read regularly for pleasure. Children will be provided with suggested reading books at a level appropriate to them, and our classroom libraries offer a wide selection of engaging texts for them to enjoy both in school and at home.

As in the Autumn Term, we ask that children read five times per week at home. Reads should continue to be logged using Boom Reader. If you experience any difficulties accessing Boom Reader, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Our weekly reading raffle will continue—each week that your child completes their five home reads, they will earn a ticket and a chance to be drawn as our next winner. We would also greatly appreciate you discussing your child’s reading with them whenever possible.

Mathematics

We will continue our work on multiplication and division before moving on to shape, space and measure, and fractions. In preparation for the national Year 4 Multiplication Check, we will continue to develop rapid recall of times tables. Having focused on the 3 times table this term, we will move on to the 4 times table in the Spring Term.

We encourage children to practise regularly at home using TT Rockstars and for additional practice for the Year 4 check, children can use the following resource:

Other areas of the curriculum

This term, we will be looking at the Romans in History.  In Science, we will be investigating light and shadows before starting our plant topic.   In RE, we will be looking at 'Why people follow God and then moving into our Easter unit of about 'Good Friday', finishing with the Easter service at Trinity Church.  In RHSE, we will be looking at how we change and our relationships and friendships.

P.E.

Year 3 will continue to have PE on a Tuesday afternoon. Children should come to school in their PE kit instead of their school uniform. PE kit must consist of black shorts or black/ navy jogging bottoms, white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. They should wear a plain black / navy   jumper if required. Please ensure that if your child has earrings, these should be removed at home before coming to school or tape should be provided to cover them.

PPA/Swimming

PPA will still take place on Thursday afternoon. This term, 3M and 3W will need to come into school on this day in their PE kit.  3L will be swimming every Thursday, so they will need to come into school in their school uniform but bring their swimming kit.

Homework

We will continue to send home weekly times tables and spelling/handwriting homework. This will be given out each Friday and checked the following Friday.  Please ensure your child brings their homework book into school every Friday.  The spellings and times tables link directly to our learning in school that week, providing a great opportunity to discuss their learning and support them in strengthening their understanding.
