Autumn Term 2026

Dear Parents / Carers,

We hope that you all have a relaxing summer break. We can’t wait to welcome the children back to school. We have a very busy and exciting year ahead of us and we look forward to meeting you all throughout the year.

The year group is divided into 3 classes:

2H Mrs Holton

2L Miss Lewis

2D Miss Dawson

Working across the year group, we also have our Learning Support Assistants: Miss Burton, Mrs Anderson and Miss Wright.

English

In English, we will be taking inspiration from the books The Friendship Bench, The Great Fire of London and Meerkat Christmas. Across the school, we use The Write Stuff approach where children construct sentences and stack them into plot points. On the left page of their Writing books, children will gather ideas as a class before composing their own sentence on the opposite page of their books. We can’t wait to read their wonderful stories! Any handwriting practice at home will be greatly appreciated. Pupils will be learning to link their ideas with conjunction like “and” and “but”. Children will also be learning to write statements, questions and commands.

Reading

In line with the school’s reading policy, children are expected to read five times a week at home. Your child’s book will be changed weekly, or more often if required. Please support your child by logging reading on Boom Reader. Please remember if your child completes a book and needs something else to read, we encourage them to read a range of home books and library books.

Children will continue to have whole-class phonics lessons to develop knowledge of sounds. Some children will also have phonics books to take home in addition to their banded book if they did not pass the phonics screening check in Year 1.  On Tuesday 10th November, there will be a parent workshop in the afternoon – more details will follow.

Mathematics

During the Autumn Term, children will be consolidating and building upon their understanding of Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, and Shape. Through practical activities, problem-solving and reasoning tasks, they will develop their confidence and fluency with number, deepen their mathematical understanding, and apply their learning in a range of contexts. Children are also encouraged to practise their 2, 5- and 10-times tables at home. Children can log into White Rose 1- Minute Maths and Numbots to consolidate number skills. We will also be sending home Timetable Rockstars log in during Autumn term.

Science

In Science, Year 2 will be exploring the exciting topics of Materials – Choosing and Changing, Plants and Animals including Humans. Children will investigate the properties of different materials, discover why certain materials are chosen for particular purposes, and explore how some materials can be changed. They will also learn about the basic needs of animals and humans, how to stay healthy, and how plants grow and survive. Alongside these topics, the children will continue to develop their Working Scientifically skills by asking questions, making observations, carrying out simple investigations, gathering and recording data, and using their findings to answer questions. Through a range of practical, hands-on activities, we look forward to developing the children's curiosity, confidence and scientific thinking throughout the term.

RSHE
We will be learning through our topics Being Me and Celebrating Difference.

P.E. and Swimming

P.E kits are required to be worn to school on the day of your child’s P.E. lesson. School P.E. kit consists of plain black shorts or joggers, a black sweatshirt or hoody, white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. Please ensure that if your child wears stud earrings to school, these are either removed by the child themselves or taped up with tape provided from home.

All Year 2 children will be doing either outdoor PE or Forest School on a Tuesday.

Tuesdays

2D and 2L: PE kit to be worn

2H: Own clothes for Forest School

Thursdays

2D: Wear uniform and bring swimming kit

The first swimming session will take place on Thursday 10th September.

Snacks

During break time, children will be provided with fruit and vegetables. If you wish to provide an additional snack then this must be in line with our healthy school’s policy.

Homework

Your child will be given a homework sheet every Friday to complete. This will include a Maths activity and spellings linked to current areas of learning.
