Dear Parents,

We hope that you have a relaxing summer break. We have a very busy and exciting year ahead of us and we look forward to meeting you all throughout the year.

 

The year group is divided into 3 classes:

1G taught by Miss Goodfellow

1C taught by Miss Chandler

1M taught by Miss Morgan

Mrs Hussey, Miss Warren, Mrs Tzirki, Mrs Karter-Jones, Mrs Davies, Mrs Bissett and Mrs Dimmock will support children across the year group

English

Little Red Riding Hood loves to visit her Granny’s cottage in the forest. Her mother warns her to go straight to Granny’s, but when she meets a charming, grey wolf, she doesn’t see the harm in stopping for a chat.

This term we will be exploring the tale of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ by Lari Don. The story provides plenty of mystery and opens a world of imagination for our children. Our adventure will take us beyond the classroom — into the conservation area and through our Forest School sessions, where children will explore the natural setting in connection with the story. We will be continuing to encourage the children to include capital letters, full stops, correct letter formation and finger spaces in their writing. We will also be supporting the children to independently develop their writing by continuing to include key features such as adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions as well as different sentence types.

Reading

In Year 1 we will continue to encourage the children to immerse themselves in reading good quality texts for pleasure. In-line with the school’s reading policy, children are expected to read five times a week at home. We would be grateful if you could discuss the text and illustrations with your child to develop their comprehension of the books. Children will bring home 4 reading books each Wednesday. Two books will be linked to the phonics sessions taught within school and will support your child’s reading fluency. One book will be from the Bug Club scheme and should be a more challenging read. One book is a ‘free choice’ book that will promote reading for pleasure. Please support your child by logging your read on Boom Reader each time they read to an adult. The children also take it in turns to take home our Reading Scrapbook where they can share their favourite story with the rest of the class.

Mathematics

This term we will be developing our understanding of Place Value within 10, leading on to Addition and Subtraction. 

In the first few weeks we will be consolidating our understanding of numbers within 10. Within maths lessons, we will be sorting objects, counting objects, representing objects, counting forwards and backwards, counting one more and one less and comparing and ordering numbers. We will then move on to applying this knowledge to add and subtract numbers within 10.

Science

This term we will be introducing animals including humans, looking at parts of the body and the different senses we use. We will also begin by looking at the different seasons and seasonal change starting with Autumn.

RHSE

This term we will be learning through our topics Being Me and Celebrating Difference. These units will help children develop self-awareness, build positive relationships, celebrate diversity and understand the importance of kindness, respect and inclusion.

P.E. and Swimming

P.E kits are still required to be worn to school on the day of your child’s P.E. lesson. School P.E. kit consists of plain black shorts or joggers, a black sweatshirt or hoody and white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. Please ensure that if your child wears earrings to school, these are either removed by the child themselves or taped up with tape provided from home.
All Year 1 children will be doing outdoor PE on a Monday. Please send your child in wearing the correct clothing.
 1C and 1G will have outdoor PE on a Thursday for a 12-week block so will be required to wear their PE kit to school on this day. 1M will be swimming in school and in Forest School every Thursday for a 12-week block. Their first swimming lesson and Forest School session will be on Thursday the 10^th September and their last session will be on Thursday 10^th December.
From Thursday 17^th December, 1C will have swimming and Forest School on a Thursday. They should come to school dressed in their Forest School clothes (letter to follow) and bring their swimming kits into school. If, for any reason, your child is unable to take part in P.E. or swimming, a signed letter must be provided.

Uniform

Correct school uniform must be worn at all times, and all garments must be labelled with your child's name. The labelling of swimming kit and bags would also be extremely beneficial. Please ensure that school bags do not have large keyrings. The children will need to bring their bookbags, drinks and lunchboxes if they need one. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather that day. Bookbags will be stored on pegs. All hair accessories should be plain, simple and in school colours – grey, yellow or hair-coloured. Earrings should be small, round studs.

 

Snacks

During break time, children will be provided with fruit and vegetables. If you wish to provide an additional snack then this must be in line with our healthy school’s policy. 

Drop off/pick up:

 

Please drop your children off at the bottom main gate. If you are looking at the playground equipment from outside of the playground this gate is to the left-hand side. Staff will be on hand at this gate to help the children in. The children will walk into their classrooms independently. Drop off is from 8.40am-8.50am. Pick up is opposite this main gate in the playground and is at 3.15pm. You will see the Year One children lined up ready to be dismissed. Please do not worry if there is any confusion there will be lots of staff on hand to help.
