English
A brave young boy discovers a mysterious plane in his cupboard, he blasts off into space, crash-lands on the moon, and teams up with a stranded alien friend on an unforgettable adventure to find their way back home!
We will be continuing to encourage the children to include capital letters, full stops, correct letter formation and finger spaces in their writing. We will also be supporting the children to independently develop their writing by continuing to include key features such as connectives, adjectives, conjunctions and different sentence types.
As part of our SoundsWrite approach, children will continue to use their phonic knowledge to spell words independently and confidently. They’ll also be introduced to some common exception words and high-frequency words to build fluency in both reading and writing.
Reading
We will continue to encourage the children to immerse themselves in reading good quality texts for pleasure. This term, we will again be asking the children to read five times per week to an adult at home. We would be grateful if you could discuss the text and illustrations with your child to develop their comprehension of the books. Children will continue bringing home 4 reading books comprising of books from the school Bug Club scheme and books linked to the phonics sessions taught within school. Books will be changed on a Wednesday. Please support your child by logging their read on Boom Reader each time they read to an adult. If five entries are recorded each week, your child will be awarded a raffle ticket which goes towards the end of term reading raffle where children can win a special treat and a book.
Mathematics
In our daily maths lessons, we will be continuing to develop our understanding of numbers within 100. This is something you can support with your child’s learning at home. Throughout Year 1, we are learning number bonds to 10 and 20. In our unit of multiplication and division we will be exploring counting in 2s,5s and 10s.
Science
This term, our Science topic is Everyday Materials, where children will explore the world around them by identifying and naming a variety of everyday materials, such as wood, plastic, glass, metal, and fabric.
We’ll be linking this to our class story The Way Back Home by investigating which materials would be best for building a rocket or surviving a crash landing on the moon! Children will have lots of opportunities for hands-on experiments, sorting activities, and discussions about why different materials are used for different purposes.
P.E., Swimming and Forest School
We are very fortunate to have access to a swimming pool at Trinity, and in Year 1 we feel that it is very important that children take advantage of this resource. It is very important, therefore, that the children remember to bring their swimming kits to every session. All children must have an appropriate swimming kit and swimming hat. If, for any reason, your child is unable to take part in P.E. or swimming, a signed letter must be provided.
P.E kits are required to be worn to school on the day of your child’s P.E. lesson. The school P.E. kit consists of plain black shorts or joggers, a black sweatshirt or hoody and white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. Please ensure that if your child wears earrings to school, these are either removed by the child themselves or taped up with tape provided from home. Long hair must be tied up on P.E days.
P.E. will take place on a Wednesday for all year 1 children so they will need to come to school wearing their P.E kits, please ensure this is plain black or navy. 1B will also swim on a Wednesday so they will need to come in PE kit on this day and bring their swimming kit each week.
On a Thursday, 1P and 1B will have a P.E. lesson on the field and will need to wear their P.E. kits to school. 1C will begin their Forest School sessions on Thursday 1st May and have their last session on Thursday 12th June. On these days they will need to wear forest school kit and bring a spare set of clothes and wellies in a named bag.
PTA
We are always looking for more members to join our PTA to help arrange discos, fetes and other fundraising ideas. We are raising money to develop our pond area. If you think you can help, please email pta@trinity.hereford.sch.uk. Our Summer Fete will be on Thursday 22nd May.
Reminders
- Please do not put drinks bottles in with your child’s reading books. We have had a large number of books that have been damaged this year. We want to continue to provide good quality texts for your children to enjoy.
- Only plain stud earrings should be worn to school. On P.E./Forest School days these should either be taken out or tape needs to be provided to cover them.
- Please name your child’s uniform – especially black P.E. hoodies. Each week children are misplacing them and they cannot be returned as they are not named.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask! You can contact any member of the staffing team by email addresses listed below. Teachers will reply at the earliest possible convenience, within two working days. Please ensure that all emails to teachers are respectful and courteous, as we work together to support your child's learning. Emails sent outside of working hours (after 5.30pm) should please be avoided.
Many thanks,
Year 1 Team
