The phase group is divided into 5 classes:

Key Information

• Ready to Learn: We expect all children to arrive each day with a positive attitude, ready to work hard, listen carefully and make the most of their learning opportunities.
• Equipment: Children may bring a small, transparent, named pencil case containing essential stationery only. Pencil cases must fit in their class tray. Mechanical pencils and stationery toys are not permitted.
• Arrival and Collection: Children should enter through the main playground gates between 8:40am and 8:50am and will leave via the same gates at 3:20pm. Children arriving after 8:50am must enter through the school office.
• Walking or Cycling Home: Parents wishing their child to walk or cycle home independently must provide permission through the 'Walk Home Alone' option on the Arbor App.
• Mobile Phones: Mobile phones are only permitted for children who walk or cycle to and from school independently. Phones must be switched off on the school site and handed in to staff upon arrival.

Reading

Your child will be bringing home one of our level-appropriate books from our reading scheme. We continue to require our children to read five times independently at home for homework and we ask you to support your children to record their reads on the ‘Boomreader’ app. Along with the book they bring home from school, we would also encourage children to read one of their own books, which we look forward to hearing about in our weekly Book Club sessions.

English

In the first half of this term, we will be studying ‘The White Giraffe’ by Lauren St John. There will be a big focus on broadening our children’s vocabulary, and applying this into the children’s writing, as well as a sharpening of the children’s understanding of sentence structure and grammar. After half-term, we shall be introducing the children to the Betsy Byars’ book ‘The Midnight Fox’.

Mathematics

We will be starting our work looking at place value, progressing on to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Within this, children will be faced with a range of problems to solve. It is imperative that the children know their times tables up to 12 x 12, and the corresponding division facts (we recommend using TTRockstars at home). Homework will be set weekly.

Science

This term we will be undertaking an electricity study. This will be building on the children’s knowledge of circuits and making switches, then applying that knowledge to a project to make their own switches on a torch.

Curriculum topics this term

Throughout the autumn term we will be exploring the Hindu faith with a focus on ‘Why Hindus try to be good’. We will also be studying ‘Significant Monarchs’, and a comparison study of North America, and in computing there will be a continued focus on Internet Safety and computing systems and networks.

RHSE

This year, we will start with the ‘Being me in my world’ topic (discussing the year head, anxieties and setting targets, as well as learning about the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child), followed by ‘Changing Me’ (understanding body changes, and the Year 6 children will be learning about child birth and conception – letters will be sent out nearer the time and you will be invited to view all teaching materials).

P.E. and Swimming

Outdoor PE for all classes will take place on Thursdays. PE kits must be worn to school on PE days. Kit consists of:

• trainers 
• plain black shorts or plain black/navy tracksuit bottoms or plain black/navy leggings
• white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) with option of plain black/navy blue hoodie or zip up (no sports logos)
• long hair must be tied up
• ear studs must either be removed or tape provided.

PPA Arrangements

On Tuesday afternoons:

5/6R will be swimming from Tuesday 8^th September;

5/6D & 5/6C will be having indoor PE and art.

On Wednesday afternoons:

5/6SL will be swimming from Wednesday 9^th September;
5/6W will be having PE and art.
If your child is swimming, they will need to wear their school uniform on the day.

We are very fortunate to have our own pool here at Trinity, and we feel that it is very important that children take advantage of this resource. Therefore, children must remember to bring their swimming kits to every session. If, for any reason, your child is unable to take part in PE or swimming, a signed letter must be provided.

Social Media

We are very concerned about the impact of social media on our young children and their mental health.  The minimum age for ‘WhatsApp’ (for example) is 13. We understand that it is very hard to prevent children from using social media, but we stress the importance of becoming aware of your child’s phone usage and implementing strategies to minimise the proven negative impact of social media.

Uniform

Correct school uniform must be always worn, and all garments should be labelled with your child's name.
