Dear parents and carers,
What a busy term it’s been! Our wonderful Year 4 children have learned about the Anglo-Saxons in history, longitude and latitude in geography and electricity in science. They have produced some outstanding writing, and read a wide range of texts, including the brilliant Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. To top it all off, they put on an outstanding Christmas Carol Concert, for which we are extremely proud of them all. With the Christmas break nearly upon us and a new term just around the corner, we wanted to provide you with an overview of what’s happening in Spring.
English In the Spring term, we will continue to explore wide range of text styles and genres in our English lessons, looking at the features of different styles of writing, the vocabulary associated with different genres and how structure and plot can vary between genres. We will produce writing that is fiction, non-fiction and poetry. During the course of the term, there will continue to be a big focus on basic skills, handwriting and on broadening vocabulary across a range of writing genres.
Reading This term, we will look at the literary classic ‘The Iron Man’ by the late Ted Hughes. In our reading lessons, we will look at extracts from a wide range of novels, and we will explore texts linked to the wider curriculum, looking at both fiction and non-fiction texts. Each class will also have their own story book, which will be read to the class at the beginning of every afternoon. Book Club will take place on a weekly basis, and we can’t wait to see what children add to the class reading scrap book each week.
Your child will continue to bring home one of our level-appropriate books from our reading scheme. We are asking our children to read five times at home and we ask for your support in this by recording their reads on BoomReader. On Fridays, we will check BoomReader to see how often the children have been reading at home. All children who read five times a week will be entered into a half-termly draw where they have the chance to win prizes.
Mathematics We will start this term by looking at multiplication and division, length and perimeter then fractions. To end the term, we will explore decimals in greater detail. Just a reminder that in Year 4, children are formally assessed on their times tables in June, in line with the national multiplication tables check. Therefore, it is imperative that children can quickly and accurately recall all multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. We will be learning and practising tables in Maths lessons and would appreciate it if you could encourage your children to continue learning them at home.
P.E. P.E kits are required to be worn to school on the day of your child’s P.E. lesson. This term, P.E will continue to be on a Wednesday afternoon. The school P.E. kit consists of plain black shorts or joggers, a plain black sweatshirt or hoody, a white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. Please ensure that if your child wears earrings to school, these are either removed by the child themselves or taped up with tape provided from home.
P.P.A PPA will continue to be on a Thursday morning. The first PPA session will be on Thursday 8th January 2026.
Wider Year 4 curriculum This half term in science, we will begin to explore sound, looking how sounds are created, how they travel, how and why sounds vary, and how we measure sound. We will also take part in a range of activities during British Science Week, which is later on in the term.
In geography this half term, we be studying ‘rivers’, looking at the features of a river including how the river channel changes as it moves downstream towards the sea.
In history, will continue to study the Anglo-Saxon period of British history, looking in detail at the Viking invasion and the Battle of Hastings 1066.
In R.E, will be exploring the religion of Hinduism, looking closely at how Hindu’s worship within their homes and community.
In R.H.S.E, our topic will be ‘Relationships’. This will explore themes such as memories, love and loss, jealousy, falling out with friends and resolving issues.
Homework In addition to home reading, we will be handing out weekly times tables and spelling homework. This will be handed out on a Monday, and to be returned through the week. The spellings and times tables will be linked to our learning in school that week, so this will give you an opportunity to discuss their learning with them and support them in deepening their understanding.
Uniform Correct school uniform must be worn at all times in line with our policy, and all garments must be labelled with your child's name. The labelling of swimming kit and bags would also be extremely beneficial. Please can we also remind you about your child’s hair accessories ensuring that they are in line with school expectations. Hair accessories should be small, plain, simple and in the school colours of yellow, grey or hair coloured.
Snacks In line with our HEART values, we aim to promote good health here at Trinity Primary School. With that in mind, only fruit and vegetables are permitted as break time snacks.
