Reasonable Adjustments

 

At Trinity Primary School we are committed to ensuring that every child is supported to access school, feel safe and included and achieve their full potential.

We recognise that parents and carers know their children extremely well, and we value the knowledge and experience that families bring. Working together helps us to understand what enables each child to feel comfortable, confident and successful in school.

From time to time, parents and carers may identify a particular resource, item, adaptation or strategy that they feel could support their child. This may be something that has been helpful at home or an approach that you feel could make a positive difference to your child’s learning, wellbeing, communication or independence.

How we consider requests

We are always happy to discuss ideas and explore ways in which we can support individual children. However, any item or adaptation that is requested for use in school needs to be discussed and agreed with school before it is brought into the school environment.

This allows us to carefully consider each request and ensure that any proposed adjustment is:

• appropriate to the child’s individual needs;
• safe for the child and others;
• practical and sustainable within the school environment;
• appropriate for the context in which it will be used; and
• likely to have a positive impact on the child’s access, learning, wellbeing or independence.

Pupil Reasonable Adjustment Request Form

To support this process, we have introduced a Pupil Reasonable Adjustment Request Form (RAF).

Parents and carers can use the form to share their ideas and provide information about:

• the adjustment, resource or adaptation being requested;
• why they feel it would benefit their child;
• how it has supported their child previously, where relevant; and
• any other information that may help us to understand their child’s needs.

The form provides a structured starting point for discussion between home and school. Where appropriate, we may agree to trial a proposed adjustment, with clear arrangements for reviewing how well it is working.

What happens next?

Once a request has been submitted, it will be reviewed by the SENDCo alongside the child’s class teacher. We will consider the request in relation to the child’s individual needs and the practicalities of implementing the proposed adjustment within school.

We will then provide a response explaining whether the request can be supported and, where appropriate, how the adjustment will be introduced, monitored and reviewed.

A request does not automatically mean that an adjustment will be agreed. Some adaptations may not be appropriate or practical within the school environment, and we may suggest an alternative approach that we feel would better meet the child’s needs.

Our aim is to ensure that requests are considered thoughtfully, fairly and consistently, while keeping each child’s individual needs at the centre of our decision-making.

Working together

We want parents and carers to feel able to share their ideas, concerns and experiences with us. The RAF is not intended to replace conversations between home and school, but to help us consider requests in a clear and consistent way.

If you have a concern about your child or an idea about how they could be better supported in school, please speak to your child’s class teacher or the SENDCo. We welcome open conversations and are committed to working in partnership with families to help every child feel safe, included, supported and successful.
